Thunderstorms and I'm a jerk.

The thunderstorms today were fabulous! Summer thunderstorms were a staple when I was little in Jersey. We loved them... thunderstorms meant interruptions in swim practice, games of spades at the picnic tables under the covering, and at one point it meant swimming in the streets!!! One particular summer in Ocean City it rained so much that the streets flooded and we had so much fun floating around and swimming in them! Capri and JD didn't get to swim in our street but I did let them run in the rain and look for lightning. The funniest part was when I was talking to the kids about lightning... JD thought I was talking about lightning mcqueen, and then I said "no buddy not lightning mcqueen, a lightning BOLT" and I regretted it as soon as I said it, because, they love BOLT the movie... so now instead of explaining the difference between a car and a flash of lighting I was just talking about two of their favorite movies together. I just stopped talking and started laughing.

I just LOVE rain. Love, love, love it. Aside from the people, weather might be the thing I miss the most from Jersey. (The food and coffee are way up there too...)

And..... I'm a jerk. The library called today and so we went to pick the book they were holding for us. Since I had a few on hold I wasn't sure which one it was. Turns out it was Purplicious. Capri was sooo excited. So we got JD a book about whales, and a few others... and checked them out. (side note: the trip went better than I thought it would). Anyway, after a lengthy explanation about how we don't rip books, especially library books, as we're pulling into our neighborhood I hear rrrriiiipppppp. I of course panic, and yes it was Capri. She was ripping the plastic liner off the outside of the book.... I flipped and yelled at her. And it was clear she felt bad. Then it dawned on me. She thought it was a wrapper. She was trying to unwrap the book. I don't know why she was trying to do this as she had already had the book open and looked through a few times.... but that's what she was trying to do. It's not a bad rip, and I did tape it back together, though not before I, being the jerk I am, made my daughter feel horrible. I've felt awful about it all day, and have apologized profusely.

Hopefully tomorrow goes a little better. And hopefully I haven't damaged Capri and made her a freak about library books.

  1. She might be damaged. lol. I think the best thing to do when we do something like that with our kids is just what you did. Admit it and apologize. We're human, and I think they appreciate it when we admit that.

  2. I sooooo know the feeling of a response before a total assessment of the situation. It is called being human.
