When I was little Memorial Day was something to look forward to. It meant Capri Pool (our community pool) was open for the summer season! It meant fire truck rides, and lots of BBQ, watermelon, blueberries, and fruit stands open along the road. It meant showing off new bathing suits and the beginning of swim practice for our summer league. It meant that our summer vacation in Ocean City was just around the corner. It meant that summer was officially started!
Now, Memorial Day is a little different. First off, I'm in California (& have been for a while, but it still feels like yesterday I was in Jersey). We don't have a community pool anymore, but we have lots of pools available. Now, I get to dress my 3 (!!!) kids in red, white and blue. Now, we have BBQ's of our own - complete with watermelon and blueberries. Now, I get to choose not just one bathing suit for myself, but one for me, one for Capri, one for JD, and even one for Tella. Now, James and I plan vacations of our own, which sometimes end up being Ocean City! Now, I look forward to summer for my kids instead of myself - which is much more fun by the way!
This memorial day meant a BBQ at my mom's. We had our friends come too, and it was nice because all the kids swam and played together. It was extra special because my grandmother is here from NJ, having moved in with my mom. And also special because my Aunt Betty is here too. Aunt Betty had never met any of my kids, and only met James once. Capri has definitely taken to her and my grandmother who we call "mom mom". It was a little weird having my two lives collide - family from NJ and family from CA - but great nonetheless.
I think James had fun too.. but he was on kid duty by the pool most of the day, and with scuffy and his wildness I think James had at least 15 heart attacks. I bet James is exhausted. He's such a great daddy! The day ended with James putting the kids to bed, I even heard him read Capri's favorite book Pinkalicious... and tell a few bed time stories. I married a STUN of a husband!
